What is Essential Oil?

Essential Oils are oily aromatic liquids found in parts of plants such as flowers, shrubs, leaves, barks, rinds and seeds.

All plants have distinct chemical compounds that give its characteristics aroma and scent. The compounds are non-water soluble that can be extracted to be used as remedies. These oily aromatic and intense substance are named essential oil. 

Essentially, these unique aromatic oils of plants have benefited mankind for centuries. For the plant, essential oils works to repel insects, protect plant cellular structure, heal and repair damaged plant tissues and more. Mankind have been using aromatic parts of various plants to include in cooking, to add flavoring and aroma as well as in healing therapies. Herbs such as the cinnamon tree bark and curry leaves are used in mainly cooking. Lemon grass and lemon with its citrus and pungent aroma is also great in food and for repelling insects.

 

How Essential Oil works?

Essential oils work its magic when inhaled or spread thinly over the skin. It creates an emotional and spiritual trigger or catalyst to the natural healing process.

Essential oils are minute volatile aromatic molecules that can seep through skin and is pleasant when inhaled. The molecules are so tiny that they are able to seep through the outer layer of the skin into the dermis and finally into the bloodstream. When breathed in, the molecules seep through the nasal cavity cells and tissues all the way to the lungs. As the volatile molecules enters the bloodstream, it triggers the natural healing process.

For instance, inhaling the aroma from an essential oil produces a calming effect that soothes exhaustion and frustration from hard tiring days. It also activates the limbic system of the brain that invoke pleasant memories and emotions linking to the scent.

The process of inhaling essential oils, triggers the scent associated memories. Technically, the scent data, delivered in a form of nerve impulses will reach the brain. It is then compared, sorted out and categorized to the good memories associated with that specific scent. From then, the processed data is used to simulate pleasant feelings and actions despite our stressful endeavors.

The effect of the essential oils can be observed in a matter of seconds. From the initial inhalation, the triggers caused in the limbic system leads to secretion of certain hormones to regulate specific body functions such as stimulating the immune system and improving the digestive system. How our body response to the essential oil depends on the qualities of the oil. It could be a relaxing sensation or a stimulating experience.
